TRENTHAM WORK

Davolo is Impressive NOTES AND COMMENTS Cup Horses In Action

(.2*

The Watcher.)

There was not a great deal of fast work at Trentham yesterday morning. but what there was proved interesting. Conditions were perfect, being ealm and clear, while the going, although there had been a heavy dew, was fast. The course proper on the outside was open, and it would probably be a trifle faster than the trial grass. The plough was open for pace work. Red Sun Goes Well. Red Sun, giving Sunee his usual allowance and running on the outside, was go* ins the better at the end of seven furlongs in 1.29 2-5. They ran the fitat half in 53’2-5, and the last four in al 2-5, Both are fit and sound 9 s a and have worked very pleasingly. Fracas Looks Well. H. Cutts gave his team useful tasks, increasing the pace in the straight, and Imwept up to the halfHpile barrier and cantered down the cbijrse proper. Fracas took the eye aa being an exceptionally fit and wejl-copditioned mare. Two-yeapnlds. Paper Slipper an<J Nurse Nightingale cantered down together from the halfmile on the course. Smart Sprint. Variant -nnd Roaming were in full stride passing the half on the course proper, and they ran 48. Variant was doing it the better at the finish of a smart, but not exceptional gallop, for the track is fast. Galloped Well, Nfltium appeared to be doing it better than Brabant over five furlongs on the course proper, and at the finish .Notium - swerved badly and nearly lost his rider. Laughing Lass cantered down over the same ground. _ Gay Chief apd Blue Garter ran five m • 1.2 i, the last half in 494. The two-year-old went nicely. Cup Lightweight. Argeptie and Rona Bay finished up their work with a half-mile sprint in 50. Rona Bay looks a fit mare. An Improved Gelding. Silver Ring did a couple of rounds of pace work on the plough. He looks very well and forward, much more so than at the New Zealand Cup meeting. A Solid Mile. Gay Broney was doing it a bit better than Sweet Agnes over a mile On the trial in 1.42, the last half in 51 1-5. but they were both going well, and it was a good gallop. Sweet Agues is forward. Stablemates. Hunting Cat and Passion Fruit were both travelling well at the finish of a mile on the course proper in 1.44, the first half in 514. Au Excellent Gallop. Davolo drew attention to himself by decisively shading JSinhoull over a mile in 1.421. There did not appear much difference in the weights, aud'Davolo worked very impressively. Kinhoull did not fseem to be travelling generously when Davolo drew out from him at tfie half, but he was going on again at the finish. It was very good work, and Davolo could have done better. Master Reynard and Supercx ran four in 50, and Bon Tray five in 1.5. Easy Work. T. R. Gourde's team were all confined , to steady work, and among the visitors ’ were Ethiop, Whyte Melville, Diatomous, Colombo, Ben Braggie, Dollar Prince, Cuscos, Cerne Abbas and Silk Sox. Promising Sort. Valroy ran right away from Revival over four in 49, and looks a very likely maiden to win soon. Riders. B. H. Morris will ride Diatomous, Laughing Lass, and Whyte Melville; P. Atkins, Hunting Cat and Passion Fruit; and R. Marsh, Brilliancy and Caen. Made Friends. Davolo’s excellent mile gallop yesterday morning naturally drew attention to his prospects in the Wellington Cup. He has never run successfully beyond a mile and a quarter, but on that occasion he won running away in fast time, giving the impression that he could have gone on a good deal farther. Still that was eighteen months ago, and bis best form has been up to a mile so .that he has to be taken more or less on trust over twelve fur* longs. It is evident [bat he is well arid he is in a stable which has won a Wellington Cup previously wjth Cojppris. Nq definite riding engagement has yet been made for Davolo in the Cup, but there is more than one offering.

Sound Stayer. Ropa Bay, ope of tbe lightweights in the Wellington Cup, recently put up a Wept Coast record, and while the opposition she has been beating piay not be so strong as at Treptham, anything that breaks a record must be fairly good. Roqa Bay is not a big mare but she is fit pnd can stay. She is by Mtisketqon, a good galloper and stayer himself, from Caviare, who is a sister Ip the Winter and Grand National Hurdles winner Carinthia, both being by Lueullus from Minsk by Martian from tie Stepniak mare Stephanie. From a staying point of view the pedigree is as good as any of the Cup candidates.

Working Well. Tbe West Coast mare Sweet Agnes has galloped well since her arrival at Trentham. On her best form she is favourably handicapped jn the Cup, anti she does not appear far from her best at present. Kjnnnujl.

If trainer E. J. Ellis bad his way Kinnoull would not start in the Wellington Cup as he had a let-up following Riccarton and Ellis does not consider him really ready for the task. However, all going well, Kinnoull is a definite runner. He did not please his admirers overmuch yesterday morning, but it was a good gallop. Kinnoull blew a lot afterward, and it should improve him.

Scratching. Seamond was scratched for the Trentham Highweigbt yesterday.

Only Coupled Pair. With Wild Chiise not at the meeting, there will be only one bracket on Wednesday's card, Sunee and Red Sun in the Cup.

No Telegraph on Course. Following the procedure adopted by the Canterbury Jockey Club, there will be no

telegraph office ou tfie course at Trentham during this week’s racing. Bred and Owns Brabant. Mr. A. G- Roberto, of the M aireja Stud Farm, Hokianga, is visiting Wellington for the yearling sale and the races, and is staying at the Midland Hotel. Mr. Roberta is a very extensive breeder of Hereford cattle and imported recently from America a very high-class Polled Hereford bull, High Stanway, who has not yet been beaten in any showring, and at tho same time two Polled Hereford cows, also prize-winnere. He is also the owner and breeder of the two-year-old colt Brabant and has at Waireia the thoroughbred English stallion Sunflare, and the purebred Clydesdale stallion Lore! Tide.
