First Ascent of Mount

Balloon

(From “The Dominion,” January ID, 19U.) Messrs. Grave (Oamaru), Talbot (Greyniouth) and Lyttle (Gore), have returned from an exploration of Fiordland extending over three weeks. They succeeded in finding a practicable route from Milford Sound to Lake Wakatipu. The route was reallv discovered last year, but on this occasion a new track was found over toe Grave Pass, cutting 1200 feet off tae ascent and removing other disabilities. On Saturday the party ascended to the summit of Mount Balloon, 6000 feet, being tne first to do so. The mountain was attacked on the northern ridge, and.it proved a somewhat hazardous undertaking, the surface comprising loose rock to a great extent. (Mount Balloon is a prominent landmark on the Milford Track.] * * *

A man named McCrorie, cook at Langley Dale station, Marlborough, was found dead in a room at the Waihopai Accommodation House yesterday morning. Deceased, who was aged 75, is said to have taken part in the charge of the Ligat Brigade at -Balaclava. *

The whaler Hananui. which sailed from Campbell Islands on Saturday from the Bluff, carried a number of passengers. The little colony at present comprises the Hebberleys, Jacksons and Nortons, and the Hananui took down eight more people. Mrs. Cook, wife of the superintendent of the whaling operations, also went with the Hananui, and will be the first woman to make an extended stay on the islands. [The islands are now not permanently inhabited.] * The London “Daily Express’s” Paris correspondent states that two engineers, MM. Rollett and Tissier, have invented a sphere of steel springs, which they have named “the salvator,” for the protection of aeropianists. A guinea pig was uninjured although repeatedly thrown in a salvator to the ground from a height of 80 feet. VISITORS TO WELLINGTON • + Mr. F. B. Pilcher, Mr. R. A. Stedman, Mrs. E. B.
