UNCOMFORTABLE TRIP

Crossing of Lake Te Anau

Speaking o£ the wonders of the Milford Sound-Tc Anau tramp with enthusiasm, Mr. Gordon Short, who made the journey last week with Mrs. Short and Dr. Edgar Bainton, of Sydney, said there was only one blot on the trip. He referred to the discomforts of the threehour trip across Lake Te Anau by launch.

“Naturally,” said Mr. Short, “everyone discards as much clothing as possible when doing this walk in the summer time. Then, after throe days’ walk in the sunshine one has to take this long launch trip across the lake and it was very cold. Even that would have been all right, were there any shelter on board, but there is none, not even a strip of canvas to break the wind. We were extremely cold. I cuddled the funnel part of the way, and two other men practically sat on the boiler. It is only a small launch —too small. But if the deck were only glassed in it would afford shelter, and people would be able to take in the lake scenery in reasonable comfort. As it is, fhe lake journey is rather a trial.”
