SEASIDE CARNIVAL

Island Bay Proposal

Proposals for holding a carnival at Island Bay from April 4 to April 18 were discussed at a meeting last week, over which Mr. B. O’Brien, president of the Island Bay Municipal Electors’ Association, presided. Suggestions submitted by the carnival executive were approved. The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, was elected patron, Mr. R. SlpKeen, M.P., president, and Mr. B. O’Brien, chairman of the executive, with Messrs, W. Churchill, T. Ricketts, L. Aldridge and C. B. McDougall members.

Permission has been given by the Internal Affairs Department for a raffle, and a special attraction is the queen carnival which has the support of various local organisations. The respective queens are: Tennis club. Miss ,1. Barke; Returned Soldiers, Miss Denise Gardiner; bowling club and surf club combined, Miss Phyllis O’Shea; Artillery Band, Miss Shirley Aldridge. A suggestion has been made to the Wellington Beautifying Society that it conduct an essay entitled “The Beautification of Wellington." and Mrs. Knox Gilmer has offered to present, two prizes, one for primary schools and one for secondary schools. The co-operation of the City Council has been promised, and a conference with flic City Engineer, Mr. K. Luke, the Chief Traffic Inspector, Mr. L. S. Drake, and the Director of Parks and Reserves, Mr. •!. G. MacKenzie, has been held to discuss details. It is intended within the next few days to convene a meeting of Island Bay citizens to co-opt assistance. As a result of a carnival held some years ago £l3OO was raised for the purchase of equipment for the children’s play area, considered to be one of the most up-to-date areas in the Dominion. The aim of the current project is to raise funds for the general betterment of Island Bay. Side-shows and many attractions are to be included, and the Artillery Band will be in attendance.
