Although to many people penguins seem to be associated more with ice and Eskimos, Auckland harbour is not without its share of these strange birds. Farther out there is a small species which is by no means uncommon, and they have often attracted the attention of fishermen and launch travellers with their under-water swimming. Among the debris which a recent northerly blow brought up on to the Kohiniarama beach was the body of one of these birds, unmistakable with its bluish-coloured back and webbed feet.
