AMATEUR ATHLETICS

Wellington Club Holds Meeting $ ELECTION OF OFFICERS About 50 members of the Wellington Amateur'Athletic Club gathered last night for the fifty-seventh annual meeting, presided over by the president, Mr. A. C. Kitto. Mr. Kitto extended a special welcome to the older members present who, though beyond competition age, still continue active in their support.

Ju presenting the annual report and balance-sheet, details of which have been published in “The Dominion,” Mr. Kitto congratulated the club on the conspicuous success with which it had met last season, the most successful in its history. He thought that their training on the Basin Reserve had proved far moresatisfactory than that at Athletic Park, and he felt sure that all club members had appreciated the time and work the coaches had devoted to their assistance. They had had hopes of obtaining the new ground at Hataltai for training, but it appeared that this would not be available until t least the end of the year. Mr. Kitto extended the club’s congratulations to Mr. T. J. Crowe, who had been selected to represent New Zealand at the Melbourne centenary games.

Although the competitive side was flourishing, Mr. Kitto said he felt members should devote more effort to fostering the social side of the club. “It doesn’t matter what sort of a runner or jumper a man is,” said Mr. Kitto, “he is just as welcome in the ranks of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club as a champion.” The adoption of the report was seconded by Mr. A. A. Marryatt, who endorsed the president’s congratulations on the successful past season. He feared, however, that with the removing of operations to Hataitai athletics would tend to slip from the public view. Mr. Kitto gave an assurance that their meetings would still be held at the Basin Reserve.

In commenting on Mr. Marryatt’s remarks, Mr. 11. J. Pollock said that one sure way to attract public attention was to brighten up the programmes, and this could best be done by encouraging outside competition. Mr. T. W. Leslie suggested that the club owed special thanks to Messrs. A. Hose and J. D. Beck for running the art union, the proceeds of which figured so largely on the asset side of the balance-sheet.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Trophies won last season were presented by Mr. Kitto as follow:—Parsonage Rose Bowl. Miss J. Lark; Peat Pendant, Miss B. Boyes; D. J.
