WAGE AND SALARY CUTS

Full Restoration Urged ALLIANCE OF LABOUR The restoration of wage and salary cuts is to be urged upon the Government by a deputation from the New Zealand Alliance of Labour within the next few days.

A meeting of the Wellington District Council of the alliance this week fully discussed the question. The larger industrial unions, including the New Zealand Workers’ Union, Watersiders’ Union, Seamen’s Union, Hotel and Restaurant Workers’ Union, Labourers 1 Union Bakers’ Union- and Butchers’ Union, were represented. Mr. F. P. Walsh presided. A letter from the head office of the alliance gave rise to the question of restoring the cuts. The opinion was expressed that the Government had delayed unduly long in making the restoration, and the decision of the alliance to make strong representations to the Government on the matter was endorsed. A deputation will wait on Ministers at an early date, and will ask that the cuts be restored by enactments similar to those which empowered the making of wage reductions: The district councils of Otago, Canterbury, Wellington, Wanganui, Auckland, New Plymouth and Hawke’s Bay will be represented on the deputation. Mr. P. M. Butler will represent the Wellington District Council. ( It is expected that arrangements for the deputation will be completed before September. 10. The Clothing Trades Union applied for and was granted affiliation with the alliance.
