WELLINGTON CRICKET

Bright Hopes For Future

ASSOCIATION’S REPORT The management committee of the Wellington Cricket .Association, in its annual report, draws attention to the keenness that marked the senior competition, and to the encouraging measure of support for this competition that was shown by the public. The final was contested by the Kilbirnie and Wellington teams, who were markedly stronger than the other six, and the gate at the play-off was a record club gate. The takings at the Saturday afternoon games were approximately £49 more than last year. ‘ The performance of the Wellington Plunket Shield team was uneven, and in some respects disappointing. The team commenced its engagements with a meritorious win from Otago, but was immediately afterward defeated by Canterbury, and in January decisively defeated by Auckland. In March, the annual match against the minor associations was played, and the Wellington team was defeated once more after a very interesting game. No doubt, the explanation of the uncertain form shown was the lack of experienced players in the team. The committee did not, however, view the team’s performance as by any means discouraging, and felt sure that the policy of picking young players of promise would in a few years justify itself. For some years to come, the report proceeds, there is an attractive programme of visits to New Zealand by overseas teams, and this fact has focused attention once more on the inadequacy of the seating accommodation at the Basin Reserve. Of the seats purchased in 1920 by the association, there are less than one-quarter left, and the facilities for the public outside the grandstand’enclosure are negligible. Bearing this in mind, the committee has once again urged the City Council to proceed with the erection of an embankment.' on the eastern side of the reserve. This, the committee feels, .is the only real solution of the seating qxiestion. and the fact that it could be carried out at little expense should be a strong recommendation for its adoption.
