THE ROTHSCHILDS
Round Table Club’s
Meeting
A special meeting of the Y.W.C.A. Business and Professional Women’s Round Table Club was held at the Y.W.C.A. last evening, when Mr. W. Nash, M.P., addressed members and friends on the subject of "The House of Rothschild.” The hostesses for the evening were Misses Batham, Billing and Mrs. Harris. Miss Batham introdued the speaker.
The phenomenal success of the Rothschilds, said Mr. Nash, arose from a very small beginning. These people, who became the financial rulers of nations, whose untold wealth and unrivalled power had become a household word, originated in the Jewish quarter of the city of Frankfurt. The influence of the house became so great that it was declared no war could be undertaken without their assistance. They went to the assistance of the Bank of England on one occasion, and It was due to them that the British Government gained control of the Suez CanaL As Napoleon’s star waned, theirs rose.
The Rothschilds were a united family throughout, and they were as noted for their charity as for their power. Their stock was not dying out, but now they had become sportsmen, scientists, lovers of art, literature and philanthropy, Mr. Nasi) concluded by saying that in spite of their fame the five banker brothers were really quite out of their element —they were still the sons of the shop in the little ghetto, and though they lacked nothing they were a true picture of.human endeavour — pure, religious and just. The evening concluded with a discussion, two solos by Miss J. Campbell and supper served by willing helpers.
