BILLIARDS TITLE

C. E. Peek the Champion The finals of the Wellington provincial inter-club billiards championship, contested at Billiards, Limited, last night, drew a capacity audience. Among those present was a large number of women, showing the increased interest of the fair sex in the game. Devine, of the Petone Working Men’s Club, did not reproduce his previous night’s form, and was much affected by the run of tlie balls, which, by intention or his opponent’s good fortune, ran consistently badly for him. Certainly Devine did not do much with the opportunities afforded him, but by last night’s play enhanced his reputation for being a fairly consistent runner-up. He lues comt second in this event on quite a uumoer of occasions in his 23 years as a contestant. Peek is unquestionably a good player, and although perhaps a little fortunate in winning in his first attempt, thoroughly deserved his success. Peek is steadv and young, and although he has yet much to learn, he knows that, and, consequently, is likely to improve. The final scores were: Peek, 500; Devine, 364. The best breaks were: Peek, 58, 48. 33, 27; Devine, 22, 21. At the conclusion the manager of Billiards, Limited, presented Mr. Ritchie, president of the Cairo Club, with the challenge shield The winner received the gold medal, and the runner-up the set of balls used. The marking and refereeing of the tournament throughout was ably carried out by Mr. J. Meldrum, who at the conclusion was presented with a very fine cue.
