DAYLIGHT SAVING

Extension of Term Opposed HARDSHIP IN COUNTRY Extension of the period of daylight saving until after Easter, was opposed by delegates at yesterday’s meeting of the Dominion executive of the Farmers’ Union. It was suggested that half an hour all the year round would be a solution of the present difficulties arising out of summer-time, but no action was taken on this proposal. The North and South Taranaki provincial executives and the combined conference representing the Wellington, Wanganui, Manawatu, nd Southern Hawke’s Bay executives, forwarded a remit urging support for the efforts of the women’s division of the union to have summer-time restricted to run from October to the end of March.

In moving the remit, Mr. H. E. Blyde (North Taranaki) said the extension of the original period of summer-time had resulted in definite hardship to the farming community. There was very strong feeling in the dairy'ng districts that daylight saving should terminate by the end of March. Mr. H. O. Mellsop (Auckland) and Mr. H. Morrison (Wairarapa), who both supported Mr. Blyde's remarks, were of opinion that the end of the summer time period should revert to the original date.

The opinion that the solution might be to advance the clock by 30 minutes all the year round was expressed by Captain H. M. Rushworth (Auckland). If that were done, he said, none of the present trouble would arise. The president, Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P., said he agreed with Captain Rushworth’s suggestion. The townspeople, however, did not want summertime all the year round. ' Mr. Blyde said there was not the remotest chance of obtaining half an hour all the year round. Mr. P. J. O’Regan (CanterburyW'est Coast) said that from the point of view of people with families the position was unsatisfactory, for it was daylight when children should be going to bed. The remit was carried.
