COMBINED HUNTS MEETING

New Plymouth Training TRACK VERY HEAVY Dominion Special ServicL New Plymouth, August 27. The New Plymouth tracks arc very heavy consequent upon continued rain, but the course proper has been kept open for horses engaged at the combined hunts meeting, the flags being out 25 feet. Yesterday morning Mustang registered 1.6 for five furlongs alone, the first three in 3S 2-5. Dulieu’s new charge continues doing the best work among the local backs.

Sporting Song, under restraint, easily beat the hunter Potere over half a mile in 53 3-5.

Gold Mission, working during a heavy shower, comfortably ran the same distance in 54. She is thriving on light tasks. This morning the weather broke fine, though the tracks were heavier than on Monday. Refresher, after taking 14sec. for the first furlong, ran the next half Ijrilliantly in 52, and completed his seven I'm longs clear of Glenvane in 1.35. Considerable interest was taken in the appearance of the Hawke's Bay, Manawatu and Pakuranga Hunt Cups winner Prosy Boy, and the Lucullus gelding measured up favourably, for ho is standing up to racing well, and looks wonderfully fit. He did light exercise Ou the inner grass track. High Test was not knocked about to run half a mile alone in 54 2-5. He went evenly throughout. Red Sand, with her trainer up, did light pace work. He has been off tils feed for a few days, and has lightened up a little.

Ngareta and Razor were the first to use the schooling fences on the inner, comprising a brush, hencoop double, and post and rails. Both gave a safe display, jumping in bunting style, but Ngareta showed more pace over the double than her companion, and has improved a lot in her fencing since last year. Potere went alone over the same course, giving a good display and shaping well at the double. Croydon (Jarvis) schooled carefully over these fences the first time round and was taken back for a second circuit. The Warplane gelding gave a bright display, taking all the obstacles in his stride. He went back again and jumped four more fences in good style. Silk Sox was responsible for a very pleasing effort over five in .1.8 without being bustled. He rau the first three furlongs in 40. Aussie Ra and Davistock bowled along under a good hold over five iu 1.10 1-5. They could have done much better bad it been required of them. Clarion Call and Lavington, who has been schooling well, worked over a circuit brushing up the straight. Both hit out well. Santoft was given a round of easy pace work and seemed keen to go faster.

Ngatirahiri was going comfortably alongside Whoa Johnny at the end of their half-mile run in 55sec. Orapai was under restraint throughout his gallop with Chikara and finished on terms at the end of their five furlongs, which occupied 1.9 1-5. Joy Box was of no use to Red Fox at the end of their half-mile in 54J, the first two furlongs being run in 26 3-5. Collapsing on pulling up after a gallop up the straight, the ’Warplane marc Lady Ariki Toa. staggered and reared backwards on to the four by four railing around the course proper, which smashed beneath the impact. Iler rider, the Marton trainer L. G. Morris, had a lucky escape from serious injury, and by throwing himself clear, got off with little worse thnu a bad shaking. Lady Ariki Toa attempted to regain her feet but fell again, and died within a few minutes. Lady Ariki Toa, who claimed engagements in two amateur riders' races at New Plymouth this week, was an eight year old marc by M arplane from a Maniapoto mare. She was owned by Mr. H. A. Glasgow, an enthusiastic member of the Rangitikei Hunt Club, who resides at Turnkina. Lady Ariki Toa did not begin racing until last month, when she contested the Ladies' Bracelet at. Marton and justified the confidence of her supporters by winning very easily from Gainsay, who succeeded at Pakuranga last Saturday.
