Five O’clock Party A cheery fire o'clock party, which was partly in the nature of a farewell, was given by Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Clinkard at their home in Cashmere Avenue, Khandallah, yesterday, when they entertained a number of their friends. Mr. Clinkard has been appointed Tourist and Trade Commissioner for New Zealand at Brussels, and will leave for Belgium with .Mrs. Clinkard next month. The house had been charmingly decorated with dowers for the occasion, the lounge being bright with spring dowers and the dining-room a blaze of large, red rhododendrons, while on the dining table, with its beautiful cloth of ecru swiss lace and linen, were bowls <>f many-hued anemones. Mrs. Clinkard received her guests wearing a smart cocktail ensemble, the Chinese red tunic of which was worn over a black skirt.

Plunket Society Evening A very enjoyable social evening was held recently by the KilbirnieLyall Bay branch of the Plunket Society, at “Langley," Lyall Bay, the residence of Captain and Mrs. A. H. Prosser. There was a large number of guests, and dancing was continued until a late hour. The rooms were beautifully decorated with japonica, narcissi and Christmas roses, which were brought from Pieton especially for the occasion.

A competition held during the evening was won by Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Jones.

The committee are much Indebted to the splendid orchestra, which did much to make the evening such a success, and also to Mr. Toop for his assistance. After supper bad been served, Mrs. Downle, on behalf of the committee, thanked Captain and Mrs. Prosser for their kindness in allowing the use of their residence for the evening.

Ball at Wanganui With three visiting college Rugby teams, Christ’s College, Wellington and Nelson Colleges, in Wanganui, and hundreds of visitors from every part of New Zealand, it was no wonder that, the ball arranged by Nga Tawa old girls resident in the district should be a popular and happy reunion. The dance was held in the “Big School,” by courtesy of Mr. and Mrs. J. Allen, and .supper was served in the dining hall. Gold candles and big baskets of spring flowers in tones of gold and yellow were effectively used as decorations by Mrs. Douglas Earle. The committee for the dance were Mesdames Earle, wearing black ring velvet and taffeta; T. McWilliams, green velvet; N. Nethercroft, ivory lace; H. Blyth, ivory lace; M. Watkins, black georgette and lace. Mesdames H. D’Arcy, wearing ivory lace, and H. E. B. Newton, in scarlet surah crepe, were the joint secretaries; also Misses Walkinton (Waverley), black ring velvet; J. Parsons (Waltotara), floral ripple crepe; J. Cranstone, rose corded crepe; N. Burgess, metal cloth; G. Adams, ivory angel-skin lace; J. Treloar, blue crepe and scarlet posy; H. Wyley, floral satin; M. Brewer (Waverley), green velvet. Mesdames B. Knight, S. Fisher, J. National Club Bridge Party The large, comfortable lounge of the newly-fonned National Club, presented an animated scene last night when its first bridge party was held. Tall vases filled with berried sprays and greenery contrasted well with the ochre-shaded walls and the soft, beautifully-blended tapestry curtains. Warm fires in all the rooms added to the atmosphere of cheer and well-being. In the writing room, with Ito comfortable armchairs arranged In groups, the spring blossoms of pink flowering currant and the round buds of camellias stood in quaint vases. Mr. Hume, speaking at the beginning of the evening, introduced the hostess, Mrs. H. A. Parkinson (who wore black and pink floral crepe), and spoke of a suggestion that had been made of forming a bridge circle within the club. Among those who booked tables were:—Mrs. and Miss Toogood, Miss E. Cook, Mrs. Suckling, Miss E. Meiklejohn, Mrs. Stone, Mrs. Aston, Mrs Aiken, Mrs. Clark, Miss Clifford, Mis. V. Witten, Mrs. T. Brown, who is leaving Wellington to take up her residence in Sydney, was the guest of honour at an afternoon tea party at the D.LC. tearooms yesterday given by Mrs. F. L. Robertson. There was a basket of glowing iceland poppies in the centre of the table, at which were Mrs. Bignail, Mrs. I. H. Nirnino, Mrs. L. Lewis, Mrs. G. Stark and Mrs. D. Cooper as the other guests. Three Bridge Parties The Navy League funds should benefit eonsiCvrably from the bridge parties given yesterday afternoon at the homes of Mrs. lan Duncan, Mrs. F. H. Whatley and Mrs. R. E. Tripe. Mrs. Duncan had three reception rooms arranged with ten tables, and charmingly decorated with spring flowers. She received her guests wearing a light, brown frock with beige polka dots and matching collar and cuffs.

Mrs. Whatley’s tables were arranged in the ping-pong room, which is artistically decorated in scarlet lacquer and black, the drawing and dining-rooms being gay with many spring flowers. Mrs. Whatley wore a smart black and white ensemble.

Spring flowers wore also arranged in Mrs. Tripe’s home, and both Mrs. Larnach and Mrs. Gibson Stott had separate tables at their homes. Among those who arranged tables were: Mesdames Whatley, L. O. Mrs. T. J. Edmonds has returned to Christchurch from a visit to Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. H. Heron were Wellington visitors to Wanganui at the week-end.
