Sir Alexander and Lady Herdman were passengers from Wellington last night for the north.

The Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, M.L.C., recently elected to the Council of Victoria University College, Wellington, was welcomed by the chairman, Mr. P. Levi, on taking his seat at last night’s meeting.

Mr. Walter Hoffmann, Vice-Consul for the United States, and Mrs. Hoffmann, left Wellington last, night, for Auckland, en route to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, where Mr. Hoffmann will act as third secretary of the American legation.

Mr. E. Wiltshire was a passenger last night for the south. Mr. 11. G. Kain was a passenger from Wellington last night for the south. Captain Hammond, of the Northern Steamship Company, arrived at Wellington yesterday from Auckland. Mr. 11. G. Miller, managing director of the Firestone Tyre and Rubber Co. of New Zealand, returned to Wellington yesterday from a visit to the South Sea Islands.

.Mr. V. N. Hubble has been appointed temporary Crown solicitor at Auckland during the absence from New Zealand of Mr. V. R. S. Meredith. Mr. 11. A. Parkinson, M.A.. was reelected treasurer of the Council of Victoria University College, Wellington, at last night’s meeting of the council. Mr. William Anderson and Mr. William Harvey, both of Napier, have been appointed members of the Assessment Court for the district of Taradale. .Messrs. R. M. Firth and W. Taylor, who have been appointed New Zealand Trade and Tourist Commissioners in Western United States and in Sydney, respectively, are visiting the South Island, and will return to Wellington next week.

Salvesen, wiio is in command of the Norwegian steamer Aclybryn, at present in New Zealand waters, was in command of the steamer Penybryn when that vessel stooil by the passenger liner Tahiti as she sank in mid-I’acilic in August, 1930. On the present voyage Captain Salvesen is accompanied by his wife and daughter. Mr. I’. Levi. M.A., was last night reelected for a further year chairman of the Council of Victoria University College, Wellington, on the motion of Mr. J. A. Valentine, seconded by Dr. T. I). M. Stout. Dr. Stout expressed the council’s appreciation of Mr. Levi’s services in the past and the hope that he would consent to act for a further year.

Mr. Brian O’Rorke, who was entrusted with the whole of the interior decoration of the new Orient liner Orion, constructed by Vickers-Armstrongs, Ltd., Barrow-in-Furness, has done much distinguished work of this character ashore. He was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1901, took degrees in engineering and architecture at Cambridge and the five years’ course at the Architectural Association, and won various Architectural Association and Royal Institute prizes. He has worked in London offices under Messrs. Easton and Robertson, who carried out a good deal of the modernisation of the Savoy and Berkeley Hotels, and Mr. Charles Holden. His work on his own account during tiie last four years has included country houses and alterations to and decorative schemes for several London houses.
