Davis Cup Zone Final

THRILLING DOUBLES GAME

v London, July 23. The doubles match in the Davis Cup inter-zone final at Wimbledon resulted :— W. L. Allison and J. Van Ryn (U.S.A.) defeated G. von Cramm and K. Lund (Germany), 3-6, 6-3, 5-7, 9-7, 8-6. America now leads by two matches to one. with tlie two last singles games still to be played. A stirring duel was fought out at high pressure. Tlie Germans, by combining better, took the first set, but the Americans speeded up in the second and evened the sets.

Tiie Americans trailed 2-5 in the third set, but a vigorous rally enabled them to draw level at 5-5. Lund’s cannonballs, however, gave the Germans the set.

The fourth set was a dour struggle. The Germans had two match-pointe at 5-1, but Allison, by serving magnificently. saved the game. In the fifth set all the players were patchy as a result, of the strain. Tlie Americans led 4-1, but tlie Germans levelled ami had three match-points at 6-5. Van Ryn, however, held service and Allison clinched the match with an ace.

The newspapers pay a tribute to von Cramin’s chivalry when in the fifth ser he intimated to the umpire that lie had hit the ball twice, of which nobody was aware.
