Conditions of Contest Announced

Wide interest lias already been shown in the "Wellington Compel it ions Society's grand opera contest which is being sponsored by “The Dominion'’ and was announced yesterday. The contest is being held in conjunction with the Wellington Competitions Society's 1935 festival, commencing on August 21, and the prize will enable tlie winner to compete at Ballarat anil Melbourne for tlie Melbourne “Sun” aria contest for Australia and New Zealand. Tlie secretary of the society reports that :i number of inquiries have been received for tlie conditions of the contest, which arc as follow :— (1) A competitor must lie born in Australia or New Zealand and be over 17 and under 30 years of age on August 23, 1935. (2) Competitor must sing one aria from grand opera, own selection. (3) Any competitor at present an entrant for the operatic solo (classes 39 and 40) in tlie society’s 1935 competitjons and having selected a grand opera aria may sing tlie same selection. (4) The society reserves tlie right, in accordance with its general rule, to withhold the prize should tlie adjudicators consider tlie standard of performance not sufficiently high. (5) Tlie society’s official accompanist will be available for competitors, but a competitor may provide his or her own accompanist if desired. (6) Competitors must enter in their own names and be prepared to furnish birth certificates
(7) Entry fee of 5/- must accompany an entry (For those competitors already entered for tlie society’s vocal championships, the entry foe is 2/-.)
An advertisement published to-day indicates that further particulars can be obtained from tlie secretary of the society, 35 Taranaki Street. Entries for the contest close definitely on August 12.
