GROWING OF ROSES

Horticultural Society Holds Evening

\ demonstration of rose pruning of young ami old trees, fur both garden ami 'exhibition purposes, was given by Mr. T. Waugh to <»0 members at the Weilington Horticultural Society's rose evenin'- recently. Mr. Waugh also explained’the reasons for the budding of roses and commented upon the various stocks Mr. J. G. MacKenzie dealt with the growing of roses. He said the following conditions were essential for success: —Open situation, separate hods of an easv width for working, and good soil or loain. It was possible to keep roses for too long a period, ami rose beds were also apt to suffer from rose sickness, thus showing the necessity for a transfer. Roses suitable for separate beds were: Shot Silk Mrs. IL Stevens. Mabel Mor.se. Etoile de Hollande. Souvenir de Georges I'ernet, Emma Wright, ami Lady Inchiquin. It was desirable to obtain roses suitable for the locality and to cultivate with a hoe once n week. Bedding roses were best in Wellington on account of the wind. Polynntba roses mentioned were: Else and'Kirsten Poulsen, and Gloria Mundi: climbing. Pauls • Scarlet and Miss Marion Manifold; Wichuriana: Alberic Barbier. Mr. D. G. McGirr mentioned that the pruning of well-established roses should not be too severe, as it was not desirable io discourage good growth. He also explained the method of pruning such roses, dealing with water shoots as distinct from stickers, limitation of shoots and buds. He asked each member present to send in the names of his favourite dozen garden or exhibition roses so that an analysis might bo made, and mentioned that rose circles would be continued, nnd that all enthnsiaSts sending in their names to the society would be enrolled as circle members.

Mr. G. S. Nicol] dealt briefly with the cultivation of roses and control of pests, and gave a selection of roses suitable for garden purposes.
