REPERTORY THEATRE
Of “Sheppey.” Mr. Somerset Maugham's latest play, which is to be given the first of four performances by the Wellington Repertory Society at the Concert Chamber to-morrow night, the late Mr. .1. 1Grein, doyen of dramatic critics, wrote: “The production of a new play by MrSomerset Maugham is an event of first importance claiming serious attention and demanding considered criticism. Not only is lie u novelist of universal distinction lint yn established dramatist whose powers of characterisation and narrative are in themselves a justification for lively anticipation and a promise that the movement on the stage will not lack effectiveness. or credibility. The figure of Sheppey is no shadowy outline, no mere crank or fool which we must suffer for the sake of the subject. The character io wholly vital. Mr. Maugham’s genius is at its best when lie whips human folly and stupidity and in ‘Sheppey’ this is the drift of his aim.” “Sheppey” will be produced by Mr. Leo dn Chateau.
