Davis Cup Match Against France BRILLIANT DOUBLES GAME Paris, June 9. By winning the doubles match against France in their meeting in the second round of the Davis Cup to-day, Australia gained a 2-1 lead. The remaining singles will be played to-mor-row. Scores in the doubles were:— J. H. Crawford and A. K. Quist (Australia) defeated J. Borotra and M. Bernard (France), 6-3, 4-6, 10-8, 6-4. Ten thousand spectators were present to watch the match. Crawford was in excellent form, playing quietly and confidently. He dominated the Australian attack, his low volleying enabling the Australians to ge’ to the net. Quist’s volleys were uncertain, but the Australians combined well. Bernard was obviously nervous at the start, but later in the match he served and smashed confidently. Borotra, bounding all over the cqrnrt, volleyed in typical style, but he attempted to do too much. The Frenchmen captured the second set, from being 3-4 behind with a run of brilliant shots.

There was a great struggle in the third set France was ahead 5-4. but Australia equalised, and. after breaking through Bernard's service, took the set.

In tbe final set Bernard hardly made a mistake, but Borotra’s anxiety to make winners frequently caused him to net. Quist and Crawford smashed in great style. Except for the first set, in which Bernard was overawed. and parts of the second, in w'deh Quist struck a bad patch, the tennis was scintillating. In the first singles on Saturday Crawford beat Merlin and Bonssns beat McGrath. SOUTH AFRICA WINS Polish Team Eliminated Warsaw, June 9. By winning one of the concluding singles to-day South Africa eliminated Poland in the Davis Cup tennis series, Results are:— Farquharson (South Africa) defeated Tarlowski (Poland). 3-6, 6-1. 7-5, 6-3. Hedda (Poland) defeated Kirby (South Africa). 4-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, In earlier matches South Africa won one singles and the doubles and Poland the other singles game. GERMANY LEADS ITALY Victory in Doubles Match Berlin, June 9. In tbe Davis Cup tennis, match between Germany and Italy, tbe doubles match resulted.:— Von Gramm and Denker (Germany) defeated Quintaville and Taroui (Italy). 4-6, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.

On Saturday both sides won one singles match.
