Perry Defeats Crawford In Semi-finals TENNIS IN PARIS Von Cramm Rises High Against Austin By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received June 2. 6.40 p.m.) London, June 1. In the semi-finals of the men’s singles at the French tennis championships von Cramm defeated Austin. and Perry deleated Crawford. x Ten thousand people were present. The weather was hot ancLduil. Von Cramm won a great match through superior fitness. Austin was exhausted in the fifth set, but struggled on gamely, although he lost accuracy. The German employed a powerful, destructive service, and maintained the pressure. Von Cramm rose to great heights in the fifth set, his splendid service and superior physique helping him to score a decisive win. Crawford began his match against Perry in a light rain. Crawford won his service, Perry also winning his after protracted rallies which gave promise of a long, hard match. Each man then took the other’s service. After a beautiful display of fast driving, Perry won the fifth game to love, Crawford twice netting difficult volleys and the English- . man established a lead of 5-2. He often beat Crawford with superbly angled drives. Hopinan says Perry won because he was the better. He and Crawford have played each other sufficiently , to know each other’s weaknesses. Perry rarely failed in his plans The Australian Press Association says the Australian was never confident of himself, while the Englishman’s buoyant spirits and skill rose superior to the handicaps imposed by the miserable conditions. Perry won by greater initiative, mobility and more consistent stroke play. Rain began to fall steadily, and play was stopped for 10 minutes. The light then improved, and Perry continued to take the initiative, forcing the pace. Crawford, however, staged some astonishing rallies, but his form was spasmodic and the match generally was dis appointing. Von Cramm played with amazing accuracy and aggression against McGrath in the quarter-final, and employed a forceful service. McGrath’s form was excellent, and most of the games were closely contested, but von Cramm was the more accurate. He has every chance of retaining his title. Crawford disposed of Bernard with consummate ease. Crawford was in great touch, and, with masterly strokemaking, sped through three sets in 50 minutes. There was an unexpected result to Austin’s 24-hour battle with MenzeL It was one of the few occasions in Austin’s career that he has won by superior stamina after his opponent had led by two sets to one. Austin won by forcing tactics and remained comparatively fresh while Menzel, in the fifth set, was staggering about the court. Perry bustled Boussus so much that the latter was unable to execute even his favourite shots. Results are as follow:— Men’s Singles.
