GOLDEN WEDDING

Mr. and Mrs. B. G. H. Burn

Last Thursday Mr. and Mrs. B. G. H. Burn, Main Road, Karori, celebrated their golden wedding, and received the congratulations of a large circle of friends.

The marriage ceremony, which took place in the home of the bride in Elizabeth Street, was performed by the Rev. J. Moir. Mr. Burn, who was born in the 1 Old Country, arrived in New Zealand by the ship Orarl in 1879. Six years later he married a daughter of the late Mr. Allan Lewer (who came to New Zealand In the ship Oliver Laing in 1856). Mr. Burn was for 11 years in the employ of W. and G. Turnbull and Co., and later served for a similar term with W. M. Bannatyne and Co. Leaving their employ in 1899, he took up dairy farming at Karori on a holding known as the “Springfield Dairy.” Mr. Burn was the first dairyman to be officially registered after the: Government passed legislation providing for such registration. After retiring some 26 years ago Mr. Burn took up local politics. He was for six years a member of the Karori Borough Council, and after that was mayor of the borough for five years. When Karori amalgamated with the city of Wellington, Mr. Burn was appointed to represent Karori on the Wellington City Council, and retained a seat on that body until 1931, being chairman of the Reserves Committee for some time. Mr. Burn has been a member of the Karori Bowling Club for over 20 years, for three of which he was president.
