IN PAKAPOO HOUSE
Two Chinese Fined Two Chinese, Ah Low and Ngan Way, who were arrested on Wednesday afternoon when , the police raided a house in which pakapoo was being played, pleaded not guilty to having been found on the premises without lawful excuse in the Magistrate's Court, Wellington, yesterday. Mr. C. N. Armstrong, for the accused, said that. Ah Low had been drinking tea in the passage when the police arrived. He had just called in to have tea with a friend, the occupier of the house. Ngan Way. he said, had been lying on the sofa in the sitting-room. He had been out of work for about a fortnight, and had been living at the house during that time. Sub-Inspector C. E. Roach said that Ah Low had been twice convicted of keeping a common gaming hotrs-c, and Ngan Way of being unlawfully on premises used for opium smoking. The Magistrate, Mr. E. Page, said that under the provisions of the Act the onus was upon an accused person to prove that he was there for some lawful purpose. and neither had done this. He fined each £l.
