Mr. Justice Reed and members of the Prisons Board are in Invercargill. The Rt. Rev. Monsignor Delauy left Wellington last evening for the south.

Major J. Nelson, of the Salvation Army, together with Mrs. Nelson, was tendered a public function in the Army Citadel, Dunedin, the other evening. Major Nelson has received promotion and transfer to Wellington, where he will hold the post of divisional commander.

Mr. 11. S. S. Kyle (Govt., Riccarton) has been elected Reform party whip in succession to Mr. J. A. Nash (Govt., Palffierston North), who was on Wednesday appointed Chairman of Committees of tlie House of Representatives.

Mr. David McFarlane, Wanganui, is in Wellington and is stayihg at the Royal Oak Hotel. He will leave today by the Wanganella for Hobart, via Sydney, whore lie will represent the Grand Lodge of New Zealand at the Centenary celebrations of the Tasmanian Masonic Grand Lodg.e

Superintendent O. C. Warner has been granted permission by the Christchurch Fire Board to take his annual leave from February 22. He will attend the fifty-sixth annual conference of the New Zealand Fire Brigades’/Assoclation at Blenheim, also the fourth annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Fire-. Engineers, of which body he is president.

Mr. Maurice Gillon, who has been associated witli tlie Legislative Department for 35 years. Ims been appointed supervisor of Hansard, (he Parliamentary publication which records the speeches of members of the Legislature. Mr. Gillon, who has been acting as supervisor during the past, two years and a half, is a son of the late Mr. E. T Gillon, a former editor of the “Evening Post.”

Mr. Frank L. Kay, AI.A., formerly of Canterbury College, who made classics his subject at Emmanuel College. Cambridge, has been appointed classics master at Stamford School, a boys’ public school in Lincolnshire. Mr Kay was recently married in London to Miss Jean Carter, of Toronto. Mr. Kay left England at the end of 1930 to take up the position of assistant professor of classics at Toronto University. >

Dr. 11. B. Loughuan, S.J., a son ot Mr. H. H. Loughuan, of Avonside, is spending a holiday in Christchurch. Dr. Loughuan, who is a doctor of philosophy of the Gregorian University at Rome, is a resident tutor in philosophy in Newman College in the University of Melbourne. Dr. Loughnan has been busy lately in writing a critical examination o£ modern philosophy, which he expects will be published at the end of this year.
