PLUCKY RESCUE
At the risk of his life, Mr. K. S. Ambler, of Kelvin Grove, Palmerston North, pluckily rescued his brother-in-law from drowning in the Manawatu River recently. The latter, being a poor swimmer, got into difficulties ii. a deep hole. Mr. Ambler, who was somq distance away, noticed his plight, and lost no time in nyiking a determined and successful rescue.
Miss Gwen Gibbs, the well known Palmerston North dancing instructress, recently returned from Australia, where she spent six weeks attending refresher courses in Melbourne and Sydney. In Melbourne Miss Gibbs’s mentor was Miss Eunice Weston, Australasian representative of the Operatic Association of Great Britain. The Australian teachers have arranged for Mr. Felix Demery, the noted London teacher, to visit Australia this year, and olliciate as examiner on behalf of the Operatic Association. Miss Gibbs was invited to organise a New Zealand tour for Mr, .Demery, but had to decline through stress of work. However, it is hoped that sufficient interest may be aroused to make a New Zealand visit possible, to raise further the standard of dancing in the Dominion. Miss Gibbs was able to undertake the syllabus prepared for Mr. Demery’s visit. In Sydney Miss Gibbs continued her studies with Miss Weston, and also had the interesting experience of a course with Miss Irene Vera Young, teacher of Central European dancing and physical culture. On arriving in Sydney and just before her departure, Miss Gibbs was entertained at luncheon parties at the Hotel Australia by Miss Penelope Kay, president of the Dancing' Teachers’ Association, New South,Wales. ; . .... .
