Headmasters to Decide . PALMERSTON NOTES Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, February 14. The Palmerston North Headmasters' Association has decided that the ordinary school hours will be observed as from to-day. The question of curtailment owing to the hot weather has been left to the discretion of the individual headmaster®. ' Garden Fete.

A. garden fete, held in the beautiful grounds of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Nathan, Palmerston North, in aid of the Willard Children’s Home on Wednesday afternoon and evening was well supported by visitors. 'Weather conditions were ideal, the shady trees offering welcome relief from the heat of the day. The fete was opened by the Mayor. Mr. A. E. Mans-’ ford, who briefly detailed the fine service the home was doing. A variety of stalls and other attractions provided amusement and entertainment for all the visitors, but the conservatory with its begonias and hanging baskets was best patronised. Mr. Nathan's bed of dahlias, in which over 600 plants are in bloom, was also appreciated by visitors. Mrs. Mansford adjudicated at the baby show, in which there were many entrants, ■while Miss B. Evans judged the dancing competitions.

Wage Restoration Desired. The Palmerston North branch of the New Zealand Railway Offic*era’ Institute recently decided to request the executive to press for an early restoration of the former salaries.

Water Supply. Speaking at the Willard Home Garden Fete on "Wednesday afternoon, Mr. A. E. Mansford, Mayor of Palmerston North, quoted the increased water consumption figures. The increase in population in the past twenty , years was 7000. Ten years ago the town’s water consumption was 578,700,000 gallons in a year, and.for the year ended March, 1934, the consumption had increased to 741,600,000, which equalled almost 28 per cent, increase. Of the latter supply 655,000,000 was drawn from the Tiritea dam, and 86,600,000 from the bores. In 1925 the average consumption per head was 93 gallons, and in 1934 , 85 gallons. Referring to the recent restrictions on hosing gardens, Mr. Mansford stated that the restrictions still applied, and that it was estimated that a million gallons a week had been used for hosing gardens.

Incendiarism Suspected. It is understood that the Palmprston North police are investigating the possibilities of the recent fire at the Palace Theatre having been caused by an incendiarist.

Education Faults. Mr. G. R. Ashbridge, general secretary of the New Zealand Educational Institute, delivered a lengthy address to the Manawatu branch of the institute at Palmerston North on Wednesday, evening. Mr. Ashbridge stated, that the institute had for many years called attention to the anomalies and injustices in the administration of the education system, and that it had been thought desirable to bring all this material together in a single statement. This was recently published by the executive.

SWIMMING SPORTS

Carterton High School Carterton, February 14. Pleasant weather conditions prevailed yesterday when the annual swimming sports of the Carterton District High School were held in the Carterton swimming baths. R. Crawley gained an easy victory in the secondary boys’ championship, with 12 points, the runner-up' being W. Wilkins, with 5 points. The secondary girls’ championship was annexed by M. Lawrence, who gained 11 points, while the runner-up, M. Hector, gained 7 points. The primary boys’ championship was won by H. Sullivan, with 9 points, E. Knutson being runner-up with 6 points. The primary girls’ champion.ship was easily the most closely-contested, and finally, resulted in a.tie, both L. Hopkins and B, Dwane securing 10 points each.
