TREES OF AUSTRALIA
Useful Reference Guide So many and varied are the tree families of Australia that the average New Zealand gardener finds it a matter of difficulty to distinguish between them. While odd representatives of the banksias, bottlebrushes, cucalypts and acacias are popular with many gardeners, few fully appreciate the charm of many lesser-knowji varieties of these species, or the extent of Australia’s wonderful flora. “Native Trees of Australia,” by J. W. Audas (Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd.)- is a comprehensive guide to the native trees of the great island continent. It records the remarkably wide range of flowering trees, many of which are ideal subjects for the garden. Being unusually well illustrated, it affords the collector an opportunity of-becom-ing more fully acquainted with the lesser known varieties of many interesting species. Where it has been considered necessary, diagrams accompany the text, making identification a comparatively easy matter. Well indexed, the work will no doubt prove a welcome addition to the garden bookshelf. Many of Australia’s trees also have many industrial uses, the timber in some cases being extremely hardy and beautiful. The qualities of these timber trees are fully described, thus giving the book a twofold value.
