Red Cross Society

Sir, —As the discussion, in the House suggesting the hoarding of Red Cross funds, as reported in your paper to-day, is likely to create a doubt in the mind of the public in reference to the work of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, I thins it is only right that the actual position should be known. This discussion refers to one of the provincial branches of the New Zealand branch of the British. Red Cross Society and Order of St. John, ami has no reference to the New Zealand Red Cross Society. The New’ Zealand branch of the British Red Cross Society and Order of St. John was formed in New Zealand during the early part of the war, and has been carrying on since with funds collected during the war, its obligations being entirely confined to returned soldiers and their dependants, also the care .of returned soldier patients in sanatoria, asylums hospitals, etc.. This organisation is not connected in any way with the New Zealand Red Cross Society, Inc., which is the national body formed some two or three years ago and entirely responsible for activities such as relief of distress to all or anv sections of the community, collection of funds, preparation for disaster relief and activities therein, i.e., floods, earthquakes, etc. (such as the Hawkes Bay and Wairoa earthquakes, Meeanee flood, etc.). The New Zealand Red Cross Society also controls the Junior Red Cross, instruction in first aid, home nursing, etc., in schools, and adult in-struction-in these subjects, also the organisation of women’s voluntary aid detachments for general community purposes.-!. am. etc., Dominion Secretary. New Zealand Red Cross Society. Wellington, February 14.
