On the arrival of the Aorangi at Sydney, along with the passengers and crew, Detective Brady was placed in quarantine for six days through a. passenger by the same vessel developing smallpox. Early in January, on a complaint made in Auckland, a man was arrested in Melbourne on a charge of fraudulently omitting to account for a sum of money, thereby committing theft. Detective Brady, who had charge of the Auckland inquiry, was detailed to proceed to Melbourne to attend the extradition proceedings against the accused. However, by the time he was released from quarantine, Detective Brady was advised by the Melbourne police that the accused man. released on bail following his arrest, had absconded and could not be found.
