A LITTLE RAIN
Slight Benefit to Water Supplies Although there have been a series of damp sea-fogs and an occasional shower of light misty rain, the sit nation respecting the water shortage in Wellington is still fairly acute and is likely to remain so until there is a prolonged and steady downfall. During Monday night there was a light fall of rain in the city which cooled the air and dampened the ground a little. Fortunately the fall was a little better in the Wainui and Orougorongo watersheds. About half an inch of rain fell at Wainui and .93 inch at Orongoroiigo.. Au inch of rain is a fairly .good fall, but under the conditions prevailing in the eastern hills it means only a few hours’ amelioration. It is usual to clean the city streets at midnight with fresh water. As no further water from the city mains can be spared at present for this purpose, a reversion is to be made to the use of salt lyater from the harbour. The intake for this purpose is near the Free Ambulance building in Cable Street.
