POLICY SPEECH MADE
Premier of Victoria BALANCING THE BUDGET Melbourne, February 6. Sir Stanley Argyle, Premier of Victoria, in a policy speech, said that if the present improvement in industry were maintained and the Ministry reelected, there was little doubt that the Budget would be balanced in the near future.
He confidently expected that the Budget estimate of the amount of deficit this year would not be exceeded. The Ministry would undertake to reduce taxation at the first opportunity, believing that in order not to cripple industry, taxation should be as low as possible, consistent with the need of budgetary equilibrium. They would make further reductions in unemployment relief tax as circumstances permitted. LABOUR’S PLATFORM Abolition of the Dole (Received February 7, 12.10 a.m.) Melbourne, February 6. The leader of the Labour Party, Mr. J. Tunnecliffe, in a policy speech tonight, promised the Abolition of the dole, full .time employment on a basic wage to all citizens willing to work. Labour would also give attention to the slum abolition, the unification of railway gauges, restoration of service salaries, the provision of a permanent solution of unemployment and restoration to the Crown of the sole right of creation and issue of financial credit. TRIBUNAL TO INQUIRE Mr. J. T. Lang’s Allegation Sydney, February 6. The Premier, Mr. B. S. Stevens, announced in the Assembly that the Government would set up a tribunal to inquire into Mr. J. T. Lang’s allegations of irregularities in the electoral rolls. Mr. Lang had stated at Newcastle that from 1500 to 2000 fictitious names were on the rolls.
