INCREASE DEMANDED
Ashburton Relief Men and Rate of Pay B.y Telegraph—Press Ashburton, February 5. A largely-attended meeting of unemployed discussed the new schedule rates adopted by the Unemployment Board. It was considered that as the rates are 25 per cent, less than those offered to the larger centres, and not sufficient to maintain the men and their families, much less to pay their rents, as the opportunity to earn anything outside of the scheme was nil. the following resolution should be forwarded lo the board “This meeting of unemployed of Ashburton demands an increase of at least 1(1/- a week ail round.”
It was also decided to invoke the aid of local bodies.
