Half a million Hindus crowded the holy River Hooghli cleansing themselves from sin. A thousand life-savers prevented frenzied devotees drowning in order to attain reincarnation. Millions of Hindus throughout India are celebrating the festival occurring when the moon makes conjunction with the sun and Capricorn. The authorities have taken special precautions to avert the disaster which marked the last observance in 1908. overcrowding leading to epidemics of plague and cholera.
