BITUMEN PLANT
Another Site Proposed Following upon the recent destruction by fire of part of the bitumen plant at Rongotai, the question whether the plant should be retained in its present location in Kingsford Smith Street (which adjoins the aerodrome) came before the finance committee of the Wellington City Council in committee last evening. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, It was decided to recommend to the works committee that the bitumen plant be removed to another site; that, in the meantime, in order to cope with the season’s work (now in hand) the portable plant at Ngahauranga be brought into the city; and that, after being used, it be taken back to Ngahauranga. ‘
This action on the part of the City Council may be a prelude to further changes at Rongotai. It has already been suggested that the aerodrome is 100 small for the future requirements of New Zealand’s air services. By taking In Kingsford Smith Street, and a few acres of the land (Lyall Bay Reserve) to the westward of that street, Wellington’s aviation field would be rendered more suitable and safer for the manipulation of larger aircraft.
