NEWS IN BRIEF

Passengers Delayed

After a fast trip from Sydney the Union Company’s liner Monowai arrived at Wellington irt midday yesterday and berthed at 12.40 p.m. at No. 1 south Queen’s Wharf. Iler passengers were able to leave in about an hour, slightly later than was anticipated, though she carried nearly 350. The delay was due to some misunderstanding. The Customs officials left iu the Janie Seddon to board the Monowai in the stream. The liner, however, did not stop to pick up the officials, but proceeded direct to her berth. The Customs officials thus were forced to return to the wharf and board the Monowai after she had been berthed.

Drains Taken Over. The sewer and storm water drains constructed by Strathmore Park Construction, Ltd., have been taken over as public drains by the Wellington City Corporation. City Council Meeting.

The Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop), Councillors W. 11. Bennett, J. Burns, R. Semple, 11. McKeon, T. Brindle, W. Duncan, 11. A. Huggins, W. J. Gaudin, W. A. Appleton,, P. Butler, M. F. Luckie were present at a meeting of the finance committee of the Welling ton City Council held last evening.

Size or Beauty? “Exhibitors of gladioli have shewn us some great specimens,” said the Hon, Sir Heaton Rhodes, M.L.C., in opening the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s flower show, “and I don’t know in what direction the flowers will develop in the future. It will be difficult to produce them larger and I think growers should aim rather at improving and widening the range of colours than at increases in size.” As for dahlias, the difficulty in growing giant specimens lay in getting stems which would support the flower, but there was beauty in the smaller even as iu the larger blooms. Buses on Hutt Road.

Further representations ' are to be made by the Automobile Association (Wellington) to the Railway Department regarding buses on the Hutt Road. A suggestion has been made that drivers be instructed to keep a sufficient distance apart to allow an overtaking car to run between them if necessary. The report of the roads committee to a meeting of the association executive last night stated that very often in the peak traffic hours two buses would be found travelling very close together, and any vehicle desiriqg to overtake must overtake the two vehicles at the one time. A reply had been received from the manager of the bus department indicating that he was unable to issue a definite instruction to bus drivers, but the committee considered further representations should be made.
