VERY HOT DAY

Record For Auckland BATHS PROVE POPULAR By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, February 2. The highest temperature ever recorded at Albert Park, where the official ineterorological readings for Auckland are taken, was 86.5 degrees yesterday. The previous record was 85 degrees, also in February, and the highest temperature for January was 83.5 degrees on January 8 last. The maximum sun temperature yesterday was 146 degrees.

The explanation of yesterday’s record was the absence of wind. The temperature in Queen Street, according to an accurate thermometer, was 86 degrees on Tuesday and 85 degrees on Thursday and Friday.

Striking evidence of one effect of the prolonged hot weather is seen in the attendance figures at the swimming baths. At Mount Eden the attendance total for the season (excluding school pupils) up to January 31 was 21,023. For the corresponding period last year the total was 12,582. WAIKATO’S WEATHER 95 Degrees Registered in Shade By Telegraph—Press Association. t Auckland, February 3. Oppressive heat has been experienced in the Waikato during the last’four days, the temperature rising to 95 degrees in the shade on Friday and 94 degrees on Saturday. These were the highest readings yet recorded in Hamilton this summer and are believed to constitute a record. Late on Saturday afternoon steady rain set in in Hamilton andjcontinned for two hours. Rainfall in Hamilton totalled .17in. Localities directly north and south, however, experienced veritable deluges between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., but the weather then cleared, and no rain has been since experienced. Although tanks were filled and the danger of further grass fires temporarily averted, the rain did not penetrate far into the ground and the peat fires were unchecked.
