SURPRISE VICTORIES

King Flight and Miss Lu at Matamata Meeting DEATH OF LIA FAIL Dominion Special Service. Hamilton, February 2, Surprise wins by King Flight and Miss Lu were features of the Matamutn Jlaii" ing Club’s meeting to-day, the iornier paying over three-quarters of a century when he scored in the I’utaruru Stakes. It was only King Flight’s second start The weather was fine and hot when racing commenced, but it gave way to rain, which began to fall just before the fifth race. The totalisator returned £12,(>90/l<)/-, an increase of £82(5/10/- on the figures for last year. Favourite’s Failure. The each-way favourite, Silver fDivision, failed ingloriously in the girnu Hack Hurdles, being tailed off most On the way and never showing- any real dash. Carlisle led for about half the journey, when he was headed by Dark Marble and Golden England. These horses afterward had the race to themselves, Dark Marble’s superior pace enabling him to win decisively after he had jumped the last fence in slovenly fashion and was headed by Golden England. Silver Wattle did best of the others, who were well beaten. A Convincing Win. Swift Spear scored a very convincing win in the Hinuera Handicap, reaching the front after going about two- furlongs, and afterward giving nothing a chance, eventually winning by three lengths from Street Dancer, who just beat Carshalton. Fast Acre was fourth after being very badly left, and would have been very difficult to beat with an even, jump out. Swift Spear is a three-year-old by Spear Dance and had started only twice previously. Hampton Park Scores. Only four started in the Waharoa Handicap, and Hampton Park, the third fancy, scored by a length from British Columbia. Gay Lap led early, but Hampton Park was clear before reaching the straight and stayed on to beat British Columbia, who came home strongly after making the turn none too well. The favourite, Lia Fail, was in trouble before reaching the straight, where she collapsed and died, her momentum taking her almost over the outside rails. Her rider, E. A. Keesing, received abrasions and a shaking, being unable to ride again during the day. Barn Dance ’Leads Tlwougliout. The each-way favourite. Barn Dance, scored a very convincing win in the Matamata Hack Cup, leading throughout. He was eight lengths in front after going half a mile, although the field ran up handy to him at the turn. He drew away in the straight to win by two lengths from Gay Hose, who finished strongly from near the rear to narrowly bent First Lap for second. Nun Nicer, who finished fairly well, was fourth. The winner was much too good for the others, and is an improver who should soon win again. Air Lassie ran badly and finished Inst. Royal Winton injured herself by colliding with the rails in her preliminary, and was withdrawn, the money invested on her being returned. A Mild Surprise. Miss Lu was responsible for a mild surprise in winning the Railway Hack Handicap to pay double figures on the straight-out machine. Mias Lu and Royal Dance were the leaders throughout and had a gr.eat tussle in the straight, the former winning by a head. The favourite, Mazir, who did not jump out well, was finishing strongly in third place and Royal Secret was fourth. Miss Lu has been racing very consistently and deserved her success. 1 King Flight's Victory. Having his first race, the two-year-old King Flight brought off a great surprise in winning the Putaruru Stakes. He carried only £8 on the win machine, and returned a dividend of over three-quarters of a century. King Flight joined the leaders, Prince Ven, Fast Acre and Winlona, at the turn and led at the distance to just stall off a determined challenge from 'Whirlwind to score by a nose. Winlona was right up third, and Prince Ven was fourth, winner is a shapely chestnut by King Lu, and is trained at To Aroha' by J. F. Eva. The class he defeated was not strong, but he has a nice turn of speed. ' Lucitlus Scores. Lucidus was the win favourite for the ■Walton Handicap, and duly scored, leading all the way. Lucidus was travelling nicely in the lead to the straight, and stayed on solidly when the pressure was applied to win by half a length from Prince Colossus, who finished strongly to beat Lady Spy for second. By a similar margin Alloy was fourth, and Hampton Bark well beaten. Lucidus is in great heart at present, and after being able to travel comfortably in the early stages, he ran the distance oiit well, although he was all out at the end. First Lap’s Good j'inisli. It was with a good finishing run on the outside that First Lap won the Okoroire Hack Handicap. Crimestor andt, Swift Spear made most of the running, and they were the leaders into the straight from Roynl Secret and Royal Dash. First Lap challenged strongly at the distance, and won going away from Royal Dash, who beat Royal Secret by half a length. Bonny Gay was fourth. . First La-p has been racing consistently and fully deserved her victory. Details of the Racing By Telegraph—Press Association. TIRAU HACK HURDLES HANDICAP, of £lOO.
