WANGANUI FINALS

Speed Wins Earle Stakes POROTITI’S DOUBLE A Promising Youngster TOTALISATOR INCREASE (By “The Watcher.”) The summer meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club was concluded on Saturday in fine, sultry weather/ The two principal events, the Earle Stakes and Campbell Handicap, were contested by only four-horse fields, and they were won by the respective favourites, Speed and Porotiti. The minor racing provided keen contests, and an interesting event was the two-year-old handicap, which introduced to the racing world a most promising youngster in Wotan. There was a large attendance, and the totalisator returns showed an increase of £2Oll for the day, the total being £10,023 10/-, as against £BOl2/10/- on the second day last year. . The total for the meeting, sixteen races as compared with fifteen races twelve months ago, was £19,406 10/-, as against £13,008/10/-, an increase of £5798. The meeting marked the last occasion upon which the veteran Fordell trainer, F. Tilley, will be associated with the stable representatives, as he is retiring through ill-health. Tilley was present, though unable to leave his car, and during the afternoon opportunity was taken by some of the older officials of the club, headed by the vice-president, Mr. C. G. Russell, to bid him farewell. Tilley has established a remarkable record from Fordell, and at Wanganui in particular, he has trained well over 100 winners. Four years ago, just prior to leaving on his trip to England, he was elected a life member of the club. The track conditions were dry and fast, and a feature of the meeting was its punctuality to schedule. The last race was run to the minute. Another outstanding feature of Wanganui which cannot pass unnoted is the splendid entertainment provided by the local Garrison and "Queen Alexandra bands, who play •on. alternate days. A Hurdle Double. Sir Spear scored again in the hurdles, without much difficulty. He lay in behind early, but jumped to the front at the five furlongs. Headland looked like causing some danger over the last half, but Sir Spear drew away from him at the last fence. Conference, who finished third, lost his chance of doing any better by a bad jump at the five furlongs. Ythau faded out after making the pace for a mile. The winner jumped splendidly, and is improving every race. Form Result. It was not difficult to pick the form horses in the maiden race, and Eara was much better backed than Dawn Princess. They led all the way, and had the finish to fhcmselves. Windsoreen went with theni to the turn, and then weakened. In a fiat-out finish Eara just beat Dawn Princess, with. Spearshot running past Windscreen for third. Amante and Miss Pango were next. They were a poor lot, and neither the winner nor runner-up could have done any better. Wotan, First Up. The two-year-old race introduced a new and promising colt in the winner, Wotan, whose performance was most praiseworthy. Wotan, moved back as the barrier rose, and with the exception of Chief Lady, who played up, he was the last to leave the mark. Prevail was also slow on the jump-away, but Voitre sent her along in a hurry, and she was soon within reach of the leaders, Surprise Item, Hunting Scene, and Matrimony. Wotan, on the other hand, was given time to settle down, but having found his feet, he soon became prominent with a dashing run round the turn. Prevail had the leaders beaten entering the straight, but she had no chance with the finishing run of Wotan. Hunting Scene was a moderate third, followed by Grateful, Matrimony, and Good Conduct. Wotan, a half-brother by Siegfried to Peter Jackson and Gaine Carrington, won like a good class colt, despite the moderate field. It was his first race, and he showed himself a very resolute galloper. The Ark AH the Way. Glenvane, in the hack seven, again failed to do better than third, although he ran a creditable race. The Ark was always in front, and with Jubilee Song made the pace from Onewhetu, Wasteland and Black Man, with Glenvane on the fence in behind Wasteland. Jubilee Song received a bad bump entering the straight, and fell back. The Ark then drew away for a decisive win over Wasteland, who never left the rails. Glenvane was a good third, just beating Onewhetu, and then came Hunting Queen, Flamingo and Jubilee Song. The winner provided a good illustration of the luck necessary at Wanganui, especially over seven furlongs. He was unsighted on Thursday, but getting clear early on this occasion, he was always the winner. Jubilee Song was unlucky, but probably would not have won. Glenvane could not quite hold to the early pace, but he finished well. Wasteland ran with her usual consistency and Flamingo was showing up nt the finish. Glenvane will win on a roomy track. Palm Runs On. Palm won the hack plate all the way. Ten furlongs proved quite far enough for her, but judicious riding by R. Reed went a long way toward success. Reed sprinted her early, slowed up down the track, and then sprinted home, with the result that she had her opponents doing their best too early to suit them. Pango was her most dangerous opponent at all stages. He lay in behind her throughout, but the slowing up of the pace caused him to be cheeked, and then the sprint home did not help him. Bonnie Vale and Bold Jim did best of the others, but they never had any chance, while Diagano, a surprising favourite, was always well back. A handsome canteen of cutlery accompanied the stake, and J. P. Coyle's win was very popular. Easy for Speed. In the four-horse race for the Earle Stakes, the favourite, Speed, trailed the pacemakers, Davistoek and Tiger Gain, to the straight, and then challenged to run home a comfortable winner. The only surprising thing about the result was the even money odds returned by the winner, who was a form certainty. Porotiti Again. Cadland made a solid bid to overhaul Porotiti in the open sprint, but the latter was travelling fairly comfortably at the poet. He is racing much more solidly since being gelded, and may win a good race before long. A Close Finish. I Gold Gleam from No. 1 made a big attempt to win, all the way in, thq conclud-

ing event, but Arena, always handy, just caught him in a hard finish, which was not made any easier for the winner by Gold Gleam hanging out. The favourite. Reipar, was never dangerous, but both Full Throttle and Queen’s Pride were going better at the finish Details of the Racing FORDELL HACK HURDLES, of £110; second £lO, third £5.
