SCENE IN COURT
Mrs. Hauptmann Shouts at Witness LINDBERGH BABY CASE By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. (Received January 20, 5.5 p.m.) Flemington, January 18. It was Mrs. Hauptmann’s turn to scream “Lie” at a State witness today. She shouted at Mrs. Achenbach, a former neighbour and friend, who had been called to testify that Hauptmann was suffering from a sprained ankle shortly after the kidnapping of the Lindbergfi child. Strangely, witness had not yet reached this point in her testimony when the outburst came. She was beginning quietly: “It was either the day after or two days after the kidnapping that Mrs. Hauptmann came over to my front porch,” Mrs. Hauptmann anticipated the rest and rose, shouting: “You are lying! You are lying, Mrs. Achenbach.” Spectators leaped to their feet, hissing at Mrs. Hauptmann. Hauptmann's guards seized his arms, and Mr. Wilentz cried “Staged.” The judge sharply reprimanded the woman. She wept and said: “I am sorry. I can't help it.” The prosecution developed one of its most telling points against the accused when it brought into court from his Bronx home a plank on which was written Dr. Condon’s address, and telephone number which, incidentally, have been changed since 1932. According to police records, when the date was found Hauptmann said it was copied from newspapers, but the State attempted to prove that it had never appeared in the Press and was not listed in a telephone directory.
