MANAWATU SHOW

Large Attendance For Second Day

SHEEP AND CATTLE JUDGED Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, November 1. Bright sunshine with a light westerly wind prevailed to-day for the second day of the .Manawatu and West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s metropolitan spring show and industrial fair. Favoured by the weather,. there was a large attendance at ail sessions to-day, especially during the afternoon when the alleyways in the large exhibition halls were packed. Chief interest at the show to-day was central in the judging and exhibition of the pedjgree sheep, cattle and horses. The quality of the live stock brought forward for judging at each spring show in the, Manawatu is of a high standard, and in this respect the association has earned an enviable reputation throughout the Dominion, This year the stock in all sections has come forward in excellent condition, fully maintaining the standard of other years. The judges were loud in their praise of the stock, and in practically every section there was little between the placed animals. The entries in the various stock classes were, excellent, ■being well in excess of' last . years totals. , The total takings at the stands and gates to-day showed an' increase of £44/0/9 over the takings, for the second day of the spring show last year. The receipts were £342/5/-, compared with £298/4/3 last year. The attendance at the show yesterday at all sessions was in excess of the first day of last year’s show, the revenue from the gates and stands increasing from £202/10/9 to £270/16/6. This year the association is making a charge for motor vehicles which is 50 per cent, lower than the",charge made at last year’s show. When the showgrounds were closed yesterday afternoon, the receipts from the turnstiles, stands and, motor-cars totalled £207/14/-, which is £5 in excess of the receipts for the whole of the first day last year. Halls Thronged. The spacious exhibition halls, the whole of the available space in which has been disposed of, were continually thronged throughout the day. In these halls are arrayed the industrial', commercial and trade exhibits, displays of public aud technical school work, needlework, knitting and cooking, The fleece wool is displayed attractively in a .portion of the entertainment hall. The entries in the photographic and art classes are attractively arranged and attract keen .juterest? The ring attractions to-day were the horse-jumping competitions. Good entries, including many well-known show horses, wore received- for the various competitions, which , were keenly contested and provided many thrills for the spectators. In the sports stadium this evening exhibitions of foil and sabre fighting were given by the pupils of Miss Zena Clarke, of Wellington. Loudspeaker System. This year loudspeakers have been installed in various portions of grounds so that exhibitors and show patrons can bo kept in touch with what is going on.
