OBITUARY

4 Mr. Joseph Davies The death occurred at his home at Khandallah early yesterday morning of Mr. Joseph Davies, the first director of station 2YA. Mr. Davies had been in ill-health for some months, but his death came as a considerable surprise to his friends and business associates. Mr. Davies was a son of Mr. David Davies, and was born in Wanganui in the early ’eighties. As a youth he was apprenticed to the Railway Department, qualifying as an engineer. After working in New Zealand for some years he left for England, where he was employed by the Vickers-Maxim Company, remaining with that well-known firm until he was appointed to a position in the Singapore branch ■,of the Shell Oil Company. He remained in the East for several years, travelling extensively in China, Japan, and Malaya. When war broke out he was commissioned by the British Admiralty as superintending engineer at Bombay, converting ships into oil carriers. In 1918 lie returned to Singapore, remaining there until the New Zealand broadcasting service was established, when he came to Wellington as station director for 2YA. For the past year or two Mr. Davies has confined his attentions to literary work, contributing regular weekly articles to the “Radio Record” and “New Zealand Referee.” He is survived by a wife, by his father, who now lives in Auckland, by six brothers —Messrs. Edward (Auckland), J. L. (Palmerston North), R. B. (Raetihi), J. (Sydney), Daly (Timaru) and George (London) —and a sister, Miss Dorothy Davies (London). The funeral will take place this afternoon. Mr. P. McCumiskey The death of Mr. Peter McCumiskey, a resident of Wellington for over 60 years, occurred at the Wellington Hospital on Saturday, at the age of 85. Mr. McCumiskey, who was bom in County Down, Ireland, came to New Zealand in 1874, and started business as a painter and decorator, with which trade he was associated for many years. Owing to an accident, he had to give up b’v’ness, and after a time he joined the service of the Wellingto.. Gas Company. Mr. McCumiskey was a member of the Order of Foresters. In his later years he became a member of the Newtown Bowling Club, membership of which he relinquished four years ago owing to advancing years. His wife predeceased him about eleven years ago.

The funeral took place yesterday, following Requiem Mass at St. Anne’s Church, Wellington South, and the interment was at the Mount Street Cemetery. ,
