SURPRISE FOR MAYOR Birthday Celebrated by 700 People ___— To have his birthday celebrated by about 700 people at the Red Cross ball at Lower Hutt on Monday night was the experience of the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews. A few minutes after midnight a voice from the" loudspeakers behind the picture screen asked the Mayor to stand’ in the centre of the hall, which he did. The voice then went on to say that the day of the Mayor’s birthday had dawned, and the opportunity would be taken by those present to wish him many happy returns of the day. The voice concluded by extending birthday greetings to Mr. Andrews in the approved radio fairy style. All the dancers then joined hands and danced around the Mayor, singing “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Mr. Andrews, who was completely taken by surprise, expressed his thaiiks for the good' wishes that had been extended to him. HUTT RIVER NORMAL Absence of Any Flooding No flooding has occurred in the Hutt River during the prevailing boisterous weather. The secretary of the Hutt River Board, Mr. A. J. Gearing, attributes this to the fact that only northerly grinds cause flooding, although the northerly during the week-end brought the river up about sft. “We were hoping that that rise would be instrumental in clearing some bf the growth which has accumulated in the main channel during the dry spell,” said Mr. Geariiig. “In anticipation of a slight v flood, the board’s staff in the upper reaches were engaged, prior to the heavy rain, in picking out the larger stones and making a channel to encourage the river through.” ; Mr. Gearing explained that during . dry periods when the river was low a growth of weeds and lupins formed in the river bed, and once it had consolidated it was very difficult to shift. A channel about sft. or Gffc in width was formed, and the flooded river completed the work. • No large logs had been brought down so far,.and any small ones would have I been carried out to sea, he said. Witli • ' the present strong ' southerly, it was probable that some driftwood would be carried back to the Petone beach.
