I.R.A. Gunmen’s Attempt MONUMENT UNDAMAGED London, May 7. The “Evening News” says that I.R.A. gunmen tried to blow up the War Memorial in Armagh City. Before daybreak they crossed the frontier in a car, bringing hand mines. They called at the house of Dr. Woods, telling him they wanted him for an urgent case. Then, covering him with revolvers, they compelled him to stand by during the explosion lest the gunmen be injured.. The granite steps were destroyed, but the other mine failed to explode, leaving the great figure of Victory uninjured. The explosion rocked Armagh, rousing the inhabitants. The police attempted to communicate witli the frontier guards, but found the wires cut. The gunmen escaped.
