SMOKE CONCERT
Wellington European Fruiterers Close on 100 members of the Wellington European Retail Fruiterers’ Association and guests were present in the Druids’ Hall. Tory Street, last evening, when an enjoyable smoke concert was held. Mr. IV. Hatch, president of the association, was iu the chair. Among the guests were representatives of the Fruitgrowers’ Association. Market Gardeners, Ltd., the Hutt Valley Producers’ Association, and the New Zealand Fruit-growers’ Federation. An attractive programme of musical, vocal, and humorous items was arranged. all the performers being loudly applauded for their efforts. During the evening a number of toasts was honoured, members of the various associations stressing tlie cordial relations that existed. The opening toast was “The King.” after which Mr. F. Julius proposed “The Re-, tailers’ Association,” the chairman replying. “The Brokers’ Association" was proposed by Mr. R. Menzies, Messrs. A, Jacobs, J. Robertson, and E. A. Burbidge replying. The toast to "The Market Staffs” was proposed by Mr. D. Elliott, Mr. W. Wilson responding. Mr. Menzies proposed "The Growers.” replies being given by Messrs. Morrlsh and Copping. Mr. Hatch gave Hie toast to “The Artists,” and Mr. M. Urwin replied. The toast to “The Ladies." and the reply, were in the hands of "Mutt" and "Jeff” rbspectKely.
Vocal items were given by Messrs. Godbehere. R. Griggs, G. Wilson, and Williams. Mr. S. Barrettes saxophone solos were greatly appreciated, and the humour of Mr. M. Urwin evoked almost deafening applause. Mr. A. Williams led community singing, Mr. .1. King was heard in cofnet solos, and there were several popular renderings by Mr, IVilliams’s orchestra.
This smoko concert was the first to be given by the association.
