FURTHER AWARDS

Manawatu Competitions YEbi’ERDAY’S JUDGING Dominion Special Service. I’alhicrston North, May 8. The Manawatu Competitions Society’s musical qnd elocutionary competitions were continued in the Empire and Orient halls to-day. Sessions were held at both halls during the morning and afternoon, the recalled competitors appearing at the Empire Hall to-night. Last night the judge of the elocu tion, Miss Beatrice MacKenzie (Havelock North) said she was glad to have the opportunity of judging competitions in New Zealand. This was the first occasion on which she had judged in New Zealand, but she had judged at a number of festivals at .Home. She said thijt Jlie choice of costumes should not be more elaborate than the performer could devise. The choice last night had been delightful. Miss MacKenzie condemned the practice of using a special voice for poetry, which was wrong, and killed the poem. There was a tendency for many competitors to use too many gestures. Gestures were not to be forced, and were’to be used only Yvhen the competitor felt that such was necessary. In charaetflr work, the performers should place themselves in the position of the characters which they represented, and be that part for the time being. There had been some very promising work, and she was looking forward to the rest of the competitions with much interest.
