Field Mycologist to Visit England CHILLED BEEF RESEARCH Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, May 8. The field mycologist at the Plant Research Station of the Department of Agriculture, Mr. J. C. Neill, B.Sc., A.0.5.M., is proceeding to England immediately to investigate the condition of New Zealand meat, butter, cheese, and fruit on its arrival in England. During the voyage, Mr. Neill is to study the formation of moulds on the carcases of chilled" beef in conjunction with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Low Temperature Station, England. It is expected that Mr. Neill will be abroad for nine months. Mr. Neill is an authority on mould growth on which he has carried out extensive research. He joined the biological laboratory in 1922 as a voluntary worker and when the Plant Research Station was founded at Palmerston North in 1928 he was appointed as a member of the staff. During his absence Mr. Neill will represent the New Zealand Government at the third Imperial Mycological Conference next September. He intends to investigate the growing of swede seed, and peas and beans with a view to ultimately developing diseasefree lines. He will also seek information on the more technical aspect of seed production in order to provide for the disease-free seed on an extensive commercial scale In New Zealand.
