WORK SUSPENDED
Wainui Tunnel Construction Since about the middle of last month there has been no work done on the Wainui tunnel,. and from the present outlook it seems probable that the work will be held up indefinitely, pending, it is understood, the arrangement of fresh finance. ' The work of constructing this traffic tunnel to connect the Hutt Valley with the Wainui Valley at Gracefield Road has been in progress for about two years past. The work has only been carried on with limited shifts from the western side, the arrangement with the contractors, the Templeton Tunnelling and Construction Company, Ltd., being that the work was to be carried on only so long as it was possible for the promoters to do so. . So far the tunnel penetrates into the hill for about 17 chains—one-third of the total length of the tunnel. The whole of that section has been concreted, and a very good road approach has been made from Gracefield Road to the portal. . ’’j There were some 25 men engaged on this work. These, of course, have been thrown out of work.
