QUAINT OLD HOUSE

Early Wellington Residence FIVE ROOMS FOR £ll2 There is a man building a five-roomed house in Wellington and it is costing him £1350. Eighty years ago the late Mr. John Pattinson, one of the early settlers, built a five-roomed house, now known as No. 100 Brougham Street, and it cost him only £ll2. This house has been sold, and is to be demolished this week to mate way for a more modern residence. When the late Mr. Pattinson (stepgrandfather of Mr. J." A. B. Howe) built his home on the slopes of Mount Victoria there was no Brougham Street. The way up to his lot was by a track from Kent Terrace, and the area at the back was known as “Tutchen’s Farm” —a favourite place for Sunday school picnics. Mr. Pattinson lived in this house until his death in 1910, when the property fell into the hands of Mrs. Chinchin (a daughter), who has since passed away. Until four or five years ago the quaint gabled house was shingtled. An examination of the timbers, nearly all heart of totara, shows them to be quite sound and still of use for a variety of purposes. - (Picture on this page.)
