LENDING OF PICTURES

England to Dominions PRINCE VOICES SUPPORT (British Official Wireless.) (Received May 6. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, May 4. The Prince of Wales was a guest last night at the annual banquet held to celebrate the opening of -the summer exhibition of the Royal Academy at Burlington House. The exhibition will open to the public on Monday. The Prince mentioned that the trustees of the National Gallery, of whom he was one. are considering the advisability of lending famous English pictures overseas. He said there was some controversy on that subject, but expressed his view that both the Dominions and foreign countries should have an opportunity of seeing the best work of English artists. The Prince emphasised the opportunity which the great housing schemes offered to architects. “I refer.” he said, “to the rehousing of those workers who are still unfortunately living in lowly dwellings and under conditions that they should not be. The rehousing of these people can be achieved only by keeping rents down to one-fifth or one-sixth of their wages, and this can be very greatly helped by the co-operation of the architect and the building trade. From some study of the whole question the solution appears to be in simplicity of exterior and interior design in order to provide the most up-to-date modern appliances embodying .conveniences. cleanliness and labour-saving.” The Prime Minister, who also spoke, referred to the improvement in the national situation. He said that complacency or extravagance were not justified. NEW ZEALAND EXHIBITORS London, May 4.
