Karori Tram Services
Sir,—As a resident of Karori for a good many years, I am heartily in accord with the sentiments of your correspondents “Karori Resident” and “Bunyan'’ in regard to the scandalous overcrowding of tramcars that takes place during the “rush” hours on this route. Like them, I am compelled to travel home practically every night, and at midday Saturday, with scores of my brother unfortu-nates.-in a car packed almost to suffocation,. under conditions insanitary, wearisome, and decidedly uncomfortable. 1 think, however, that both your correspondents are a little harsh in their criticism of tramway officials. To my mind the department js absolutely unable to remedy the appalling conditions that exist, owing to the fact that, at preseut, the single line of rails from Government Buildings to the Botanical Gardens is taxed to its uttermost, to carry the extra cars put ou morning and evening, in an endeavour to cope with home-from-work transport, and it must also be borne in mind that in addition to Karori and Northland, Wadestowu passengers are taken through that narrow thoroughfare, Molesworth Street. The populations of Northland and Karori are rapidly increasing, and as time goes on tram conditions, bad as they are now,' will go from worse to worse under existing circumstances. The only remedy, in my humble opinion, to do away with the rank injustice that Karori people are suffering, as compared with other Wellington suburbs, is for the City Council to give us a shorter route that will delete the roundabout way via Molesworth Street and Tinakori Road. This, and this only,, is a solution of the difficulty. _lt will do away with seemingly interminable waits at loops, save running expenses in car mileage, and generally obviate the nerveracking and impossible conditions now extant. —I am, etc., STRAP HANGER. ■ Karori, May 5. [ln the letter signed “E. Froggart,” which appeared in Saturday’s issue, the word “correct” should have appeared instead of “carried” in the reference to tram destination notices.]
