TROTTING RACES

Wanganui Meeting WORTHY LIGHT WINS Wellington Owner’s Successes Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, March 17. Splendid weather favoured the Wanganui Trotting Club for the first of its two Saturday meetings held to-day. There were few people present for the opening of the programme, but the crowd grew to reasonable dimensions shortly after midday. Though fields were of a handy size and the racing good, the betting was lifeless, the aggregate sum of £3653/10/- being handled compared with £4549 last year. The chief race, the Wanganui Handicap was won by the Aucklander Worthy Light, who was one of the three winners trained by F. J. Smith, of Takanini. Wellington-owned horses accounted for three races, two of these winners being trained and driven by L. O. Thomas, of Lower Hutt. Flintlock's First Win. Despite two breaks in the first furlong, which cost him a lot of ground, the Wel-lington-owned Flintlock won the Introductory Handicap very comfortably. Florrie Real opened up a big lead on the field in the first half mile, and showed the way to Silver Blaek, Super Tax, Tecla, Tasman Flight, and Flintlock. At the half-mile Tasman Flight and Flintlock ran up behind the leader, and these three turned for home in line. Tasman Flight tangled and Flintlock went on to win easily from Florrie Real -with Tasman Flight third, Super Tax fourth, and Manaaka fifth. Manaaka, Orleigh Mills and Dick Whittington lost their chances at the start. Super Tax was going well at the home turn, where some of his gear broke and he tangled. Steady Trotting Wins.

Wrackless, a three-year-old full-bro-ther to Lord Wrack, owned and trained by L. F. Berkett, outclassed the unhoppled trotters in the Kirkwood Handicap. He was the only runner of those ever holding chances to trot steadily. Black Native and Red Huia were in charge from Wracklcss, Earl Bingen, Native Princess, and Bell Heather when the field had gone half a mile, the latter having lost his position through a bad break. He quickly ran up to the leaders again, but once more left his feet, and thereafter lost his chance of finishing in the money. Wrackless ran to the front nt the half-mile and was not troubled to win by three lengths from Earl Bingen, who beat Red Huia by a length. Black Native, Native Princess, and Bell Heather were on terms just -behind the third horse. Wrackless trotted very steadily for a novice. Big Race to Worthy Light. Worthy Light, one of F. J. Smith'fi Auckland team, recorded a very smooth performance to win the Wanganui Handicap, for which he was favourite. Bingen Chief was turned round the wrong way and slightly checked Surveyor at the start. Smoke Screen led out from Winehow, Nelson’s Chum, Worthy Light and Smooger. and this order Was maintained for six furlongs, where Worthy Light ran into second place behind Smoke Screen, with Winshow third, and Nelson’s Chum fourth and Smooger handy. Winshow dropped hack beaten at twelve furlongs, and a little further on Worthy Light ran past Smoke Screen into the lead. Smooger went after him, and these two singled themselves out, the Aucklander finishing well to win by two lengths. Twenty lengths back Nelson’s Chum got up to win third money on the post from . Smoke Screen. Winshow was fifth and Bimren Chief last. The race was a good thing for Worthy Light. Smooger had to make liis effort from a long way out, and ns the pace was on all the way it found him wanting over the last furlong. Another for Smith’s Team. Anita Fame was a very short-priced favourite in the Eastbrook.Handicap, and thoroughly justified the confidence. Aerial Boy and Anita Fame were responsible for most of the pace, with Iron Man. Electric Gold and Le Chenault in handy positions. Aerial Boy broke at the half-mile, and a furlong further on Anita Fame and Iron Man slipped the field. Anita Fame had a slight advantage turning for home, and easily held it to the post, comfortably beating Iron Man, who had to be shaken up to stall off a late challenge from Le Chenault. Electric Gold was fourth, Aerial Boy fifth, and Vesta Ray sixth. The winner was much too good for the others and won very comfortably. Super Tax Opens His Account. The Hutt Park-trained Super Tax, a maiden three-year-old by Maxegin from Grace Logan, scored his first win in very impressive style when he fought off challenges by .Tasman Flight and Florrie Reni in the Autumn Handicap. Great Fast and Florrie Real led oiit from Super Tax and Tasman Flight over the first round, and the contest was actually eonfimxl to these four, nothing else ever being close enough to the leaders to have a chance. Super Tax ran to the front at the far turn, and held a slight advantage from Tasman Flight at the entrance to the straight. The three-year-old finished very truly to win by two lengths from Tasman Flight, who beat Florrie Real by a neck for second money. Great Fast and First Judge were next. Walinooka Beats Earl Bingen. Wabnooka, favourite for the President’s Handicap, never gave hie supporters any concern. He settled down quickly in third position behind Earl Bingen and Red Huia, with Summertime next, Welcome Guy losing ground early through breaking. With a round to go, Summertime took charge, and turning into the back straight showed the way to Walinooka, Earl Bingen, and Red Huia, with Finoro and Smooger making up ground. Walinooka pushed his way to the front at the five-furlong post, and though hotly pursued by Earl Bingen and Finoro he held on to win comfortably by half a length from Earl Bingen, with Finoro three lengths away third. Red Huia, Smooger and Amy Etawnh were next to finish. Summertime collided with the rails in the last lap and broke a shaft, which necessitated her being pulled HP. Thomas Scores Again.

L. O. Thomas, the Hutt Park trainer, scored his second win of the day when Lord Wrack brought about the defeat of the hot favourite Anita Fame. The winner began smartly and was always in front. Ho was closely followed throughout by Anita Fame. Bolinda King Storm Queen. Guymond and Arthur Chimes. At the half-mile Storm Queen and Guymond ran un behind the two lenders, but wore unable to get on terms witli them. Anita Fnme under a hard drive failed to reach Lord Wrnck by a length. Guymond being n similar di‘<tlinco away third. A’*thur Chimes was fourth, end Belinda King. Storm Queen and Golden Oalw next to finish. Easy Win in Last Race.

Donum made no race of the Morton Memorial, the concluding race of the day.

Smoke Screen set a fast pace from the start, with Donum, Daddy Longlegs, Teri Kingi, Oro’s Pride, and Fleet Arrow next. Smith let Donum run to the front down the back the last time, and the race was all over, the Aucklander coming on to win easing up by four lengths from Smoke Screen. Fleet Arrow, who made up a lot of ground over the last half-mile, was third, and Highland Derby. Bell o’ Mine and Teri Kingi next. Oro’s Pride broke up at the start, and though she showed some pace in the middle stages of the race she never looked likely to reach the leaders.
